US authorities arrest a Japanese Man with an Idolmaster Credit Card

A Japanese man was arrested by the LAPD on his trip to Los Angeles on terms of fraud.When he presented his credit card with the characters of the popular sim game Idolmaster printed on it, the card was so cute that it was mistaken as a fake, which resulted in the arrest.

Japan Sports News: Manchester United Shinji Kagawa sidelined from eating too much??

The Japanese international/Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa was sidelined for yesterday's Newcastle United match at Old Trafford due to what was thought to be an "injury".

He was taken to hospital following the match on Wednesday when he complained that he was suffering respiratory problems.

In a post-match interview with Manager David Moyes, it was revealed that Shinji Kagawa had in fact had his stomach pumped due to eating too much!!

No more Christmas pudding for me...

A bizarre injury considering the Kagawa not being known to be a binge eater and how terrible English food is...

Also missing Wayne Rooney in the starting line-up, the red devils lacked depth in midfield and went on to lose the match 0-1.  Manchester United now lie 9th in the Barclays Premier League. Moyes should be feeling the heat now!!

Japan Anime: Why Attack on Titan is a great Anime Adaptation

I finally went on a binge watch up to episode 23 of the anime series 'Attack on Titan' (or 進撃の巨人 Shingeki no Kyojin) and now I am understanding what the fuss is about.

For those of you living under an anime-culture shunning rock, 'Attack on Titan' is about humainty facing the brink of extinction by the invasion of Titans and a group of militia who fight back against the threat. *cough* Evangelion with giants *cough*

By no means is it a perfect anime, it and the original manga are flawed in some aspects, but Production I.G have made a great adaptation while staying true to the source material. It plays to the sources strengths while patching up the holes, and in fact, I would go as far as to say that it goes surpasses the manga.

 

Reasons why the anime is better than the manga:

Japan Film News: Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" reaches 10 Billion Yen ($100 million US) at the box office

As of September 11th, Hayao Miyazaki's Swan song "The Wind Rises" reached over 10 Billion Yen ($100 million US) in at the Japanese Box Office, having more than 8.1 million people go see the film in the span of 54 days. The last film to reach the 100 million mark was Miyazaki's previous film "Ponyo".

Japan Sports News: Japanese Eintracht Frankfurt player Takashi Inui is fined for farting in German Customs

Eintracht Frankfurt player Takashi Inui has been having a good run playing in the Bundesliga.
But the German Tabloid Newspaper Bild posted an article claiming that the Japanese player farted in Customs after being detained at Frankfurt airport.

No! It was him!!

Tokyo to host 2020 Olympics!!

Tokyo was officially selected as the host city for the 2020 summer Olympics.

Despite the radiation, water polution level problems, Japan had won by a landslide beating Istanbul and Madrid.

 To celebrate the release of Disney Pixar’s Monsters University, Family Mart will be selling nikuman (Japanese Steamed Meat Buns) inspired by the film's Protagonist Mike and Sully.

Judging by the design quality, I guess Family Mart didn't have the same $200 million budget as the film

Japan Local News: Amazing footage of lighting hitting the Odakyu line train

Two days ago, Tokyo was succumbed to heavy rain and thunderstorms.
All trains of the Odakyu line were stopped for 2 hours due to lighting striking one of the trains between Izumi-Tamagawa and Noborito station.
And amazingly a youtube user uploaded a video of the lightning hitting an Odakyu line train  (incident at 1:20):

Japan Food: Spiral Grape (life needs spice)

The new soft drink from Asahi is a grape/cola beverage with a touch of spice called "Spiral Grape". 

It's slogan is "LIFE needs SPICE" as it states on the bottle... and I have no idea how a grape drink would ever be the spice I need in life. And as a matter of fact, I don't want a bottle giving me a life lesson unless a genie came out of it granting me three wishes...

I only decided to buy one after watching the crazy commercial on TV which featured a cartoon Gothic bear screaming to be proactive (no joke). I also found out when researching that the voice of the bear was actually voiced by actor Yo Oizumi (who also voices Professor Layton in the Japanese version).

Japan Food Report: The Toriko Gyūdon

The Toriko inspired Gyudon (Japanese marinated beef on rice) is now on sale at Sukiya stores nationwide! This is coinciding with the release new Toriko film Toriko the Movie: Bishokushin's Special Menu.

J-pop News: Staff version of an AKB48 music video reaches 2.4 million views on youtube

The music video AKB48's new single "Koi Suru Fortune Cookie" (The Fall-in-Love Fortune Cookie) featuring the only the staff of Japan's biggest idol group was uploaded to their official youtube channel. Originally meant as a in-joke to begin with, in the space of 2 weeks, the video has had more than 2.4 million views and growing by the day.

Japan Anime News: Laputa: Castle in the Sky causes internet frenzy. 2chan servers go down, twitter and nico nico douga survive

On August 2nd, Nihon TV aired a rerun of the Ghibli classic film "Laputa: Castle in the Sky". At approximately 11:55pm, when the two lead characters Sheeta and Pazu use the Magic Devastation Spell "Balse", Japanese internet users cast their own "Balse" spells on Twitter, the video hosting site niconico douga, and the forum board 2channel.

"Yeah now we're gonna destroy da internetz! lol"

Japan Comedy News: A German Newspaper (mistakenly) reports Japanese Comedian Sugichan wins the 500 million yen lottery

On July 11th, German Tabloid Newspaper Bild reported that "a Japanese Comedian Sugichan won 500 million yen in the Lottery and took the money home" accompanied by a photo of the Sugichan grimacing with a pile of cash.

Japan Music News: 75 fans fall ill at Johnny's group NEWS's concert

On July 27th, the Japanese boy idol group of the Johnny's talent agency "NEWS" held an outdoor concert at the Chichibunomiya Rugby Stadium, with approximately 35 thousand fans attending.

The band that used to have Tomohisa Yamashita and Ryo Nishikido...

Unfortunately, due to heavy rain and thunderstorms, the concert was cut short after 1 hour and 45 minutes. On top of the cancellation, several fans called for paramedics seeking attention to their health. Nearly 45 paramedics arrived on the scene with 75 fans being treated for illness and 7 fans having respiratory troubles.

Japan News: The Pikachu Jumbo Jet will retire in September

All Nippon Airways will be replacing all 4 of their Boeing 747 planes which includes the beloved "Pikachu Jumbo Jet".

Japan Music News: Mariko Shinoda "graduates" AKB48

After 7 and a half years, the oldest member of AKB48 Mariko Shinoda (27) has officially calls it quits and has "graduated" AKB48. Her final show was at her home town of Fukuoka, in front of 32 thousand fans.

Now she can finally stop wearing a school uniform!

The concert lasted 4 hours with fans cheering "Mariko!" throughout. In the finale, she made a speech thanking the fans and other members for the opportunity, claiming "If I am reborn, I will still choose AKB48".

In a time that Japanese Idols are on average 15 years old, Kudos to you Mariko for proving the entertainment industry that age is no longer a barrier for success.

Japan Sports News: Tweet by a college student claims "Shinji Kagawa came to my workplace" with a picture of security footage.

The Japanese Manchester United star Shinji Kagawa is Japan's finest soccer export, currently playing at the top of his game. The 24 year old Midfielder's humble personality and good looks have made him become a favorite for the Japanese public and soccer supporters around the world.

But with his fame, fans and the media are watching him very closely both on and off the field.

Disney’s CG film “Wreck-it-Ralph” (or “Sugar Rush” in Japan) was quite good. So good that in fact everyone mistakenly thought it was a Pixar film.

If you think of the film as a metaphor for the relationship between Pixar and Disney, it gets a whole lot more depressing...

J-pop News: Perfume perform in London

On July the 5th, the J-POP trio Perfume performed at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire in front 2000 local fans. The live was also streamed live with over 30,000 viewers Worldwide.

Pokemon News: New features of Pokemon X, Y revealed in the 3rd trailer

The third official trailer for the new pokemon game X, Y was uploaded onto youtube on July 4th and revealed several new features of the game!

For those of you not able to understand Japanese, let me translate for you.

Firstly, the usual new location and characters.... FYI: The new location of Kalos is apparently based on France!

A new pokemon type was also annouced! The "fairy" type. They will be super effective against Dragon types. Sylveon along already existing pokemon like Jigglypuff, Gardevoir, Marill will be rebranded as Fairy types.  

Also a questionable add-on feature is the "poke-parler" feature which lets you interact with your relationship with pokemon. (Parler means "to converse" in French)

Because I'm sure rubbing a stick in their face will make them feel so happy!!

Leah Dizon back in Full Throttle!! 2 events in 2 weeks [Pictures included]

Yes, Leah Dizon is officially back!So I wrote a previous post about her returning for a photoshoot, but now she has made 2 appearances live at two events! And I got some photos for you guys!!

Firstly, her appearance on June 28th for the promotion for the Men's deodorant AXE. This is her first appearance back in Japan from a 3 year hiatus.

Just hoping that the axe effect works on her

Japan Technology News: Docomo Xperia annouce collaboration with Hatsune Miku [Xperia feat. Hatsune Miku]

Today, the Japanese telecommunications company NTT DOCOMO announced its new limited edition smartphone, the"Xperia feat. Hatsune Miku".

It's basically the Xperia A in a light blue Vocaloid mascot themed shell. And no specific about unique features have been annouced at this point. A nod to Miku is that only 39,000 units will be manufactured.  39 is read as Mi-ku in Japanese... So get it!? Mi-ku-thousand!! LOL!!

Japan Film News: Ghibli's "Kiki's Delivery Service" live action film confirmed!!

Yes, it's confirmed. The live action version of Studio Ghibli's classic "Kiki's Delivery Service" is in production. Well... to be precise, the novel that the Studio Ghibli's  classic was based off will be made into a live action film. The plot of the film will act as a prequel to the Ghibli film revolving around Kik's training and relationship with her family before the full moon when she sets off on the trip to becoming a full fledged witch.

Japan News: The new ONE PIECE restaurant opens!

On June 28th, a restaurant themed after the popular manga/anime series "ONE PIECE" was opened to the public.

Japan Food: Aoyama Flower Market TEA HOUSE

The other day, I went to a nice little cafe behind a florist aptly called "Aoyama Flower Market TEA HOUSE".

Its like a garden... indoors....

Being located behind a flower market, the concept of the cafe is to create atmosphere like a "greenroom". Hence the vines and flowers growing from the walls and tables (it's aesthetics not lazy cleaners).

The cafe specializes in herb teas. Out of the several different blends (such as the Refresh blend, Relax blend) I picked myself a "Summer Time blend".

I was expecting more of a punch of pineapple to the face

Not sure if it tasted like summer but it was a nice sweet blend.So naturally sweet that it even make Paula Deen think twice about a dose of sugar.
